Nabil Fekir was so confident of completing a transfer to Liverpool he had already chosen his new shirt number.

This is according to L’Equipe, who say the deal was so far along Liverpool had invited Fekir, the France attacker, to decide which number he would want to wear playing for the Anfield club.

Fekir looked set to be announced as a Liverpool player on Saturday, with a fee agreed between the Merseysiders and Lyon, the 24-year-old’s current club. He had reportedly put pen to paper on a five-year contract worth around £140,000-a-week.

However, Lyon released a statement on Saturday announcing that the move was off.

It read: ‘Olympique Lyonnais informs that the negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded and that Olympique Lyonnais has decided to put an end to this negotiation tonight.

‘Although the club Liverpool has been the priority of a possible transfer of Nabil, Olympique Lyonnais is delighted to be able to count on the presence of [our] captain who is a leading rookie for 2018/2019 during which the club will play the Champions League.’

Reports suggest issues arose when Fekir, who has suffered injury problems in the past, underwent his medical.

It is not stated what number Fekir had chosen to wear at Anfield, though 18, the number he has for Lyon, is currently taken by Alberto Moreno.
