Michael Carrick had many fans
As Manchester United fans bid farewell to long serving midfielder Michael Carrick, talkSPORT.com looks at what those in the know have said about the retiring midfielder.
United paid Tottenham £18m for him in 2006 and he has won five Premier League titles and the Champions League since, while also taking over as club captain.
Earlier this year the 36-year-old announced he would be hanging up his boots and will now turn his attention to coaching.
“I think Michael’s the best central midfielder in English football. I think he’s the best English player in the game.”
– Sir Alex Ferguson
“In English football sometimes it seems hard for people to rate those who, instead of shining themselves, make the team work as a collective. For example Michael Carrick who makes those around him play. I’ve always seen myself in Carrick.”
– Xabi Alonso
“I am a big fan of Michael Carrick. He is one of the best holding midfielders I’ve ever seen in my life by far. He’s the level of Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets.”
– Pep Guardiola
“Michael is a phenomenal person and a true professional. He gives stability in our game and mental freedom to the other guys around him to be more attacking. He has a big understanding of the game and is a great role model for our younger players.”
– Jose Mourinho
“Scholes and Carrick together was peaceful. It was like going into a bar and hearing a piano playing.”
– Gary Neville
“Carrick is a quality passer and he could play for Barcelona; he would be perfectly suited to their game. I think Carrick is an underrated player in England and sometimes not only should the goalscorer be rewarded but the real players at the heart of the game.”
– Arsene Wenger
“I’m still learning from Michael. He is an example for me and I always look at him in training. To be honest, he is a mentor to me and someone I look up to.”
– Paul Pogba
