With just 43 days to go until the 2018 World Cup Cup kicks off, talkSPORT.com looks at the iconic players to have graced previous editions.
The list, featuring Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane, looks at the greatest moments from the most iconic footballers – from top scoring aces and majestic defenders to sensational scoundrels and those who just didn’t know the rules.
43) Michel Platini: France, midfielder (1978, 1982, 1986)
‘The Magic Square’. It might sound like a crap 1970s rock band, but was in fact a great ’80s French quartet. Alain Giresse, Luis Fernandez, Jean Tigana and, best of all, Platini. This sublime number 10 twice reached the World Cup semi finals, exiting on penalties after a 3-3 thriller against West Germany in ’82. Despite the football – Platini called it ‘my most beautiful game’ – the match is probably best remembered for Patrick Battiston attempting to get on the end of Platini’s glorious through ball and being clattered on the 18-yard box by goalkeeper Harald Schumacher as he poked the ball towards West Germany’s goal. The Frenchman was knocked unconscious and lost two teeth.
